Indoor Fun for the Whole Family in Maine

When the temperatures are a bit on the bone-rattling side of things, or the skies are sending down some heavy-duty rain or snow, fear not: As a guest of ours here in Ogunquit, you’ve got just as many awesome indoor family activities at your ready disposal as you do outdoor ones.

Here’s a look at just a few of the destinations you and the rest of the gang might consider visiting when the weather isn’t exactly conducive to a day at the beach.

Local Museums

There are multiple great museums within easy reach of your Ogunquit.com accommodations, including a number right here in town. Some of them, such as the Ogunquit Heritage Museum and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, close during the winter, but others remain open year-round, including the Brick Store Museum (117 Main St., Kennebunk), with its fine exhibits on history, art, and other subjects.

Up in Portland, meanwhile—which is an easy drive from the Beautiful Place by the Sea—you’ve got multiple great museums, not least the Children’s Museum + Family Theatre of Maine (142 Free St., Portland). Located in the city’s Arts District, this institution focuses on STEM education, art, early childhood learning, and multicultural/community engagement. Its many interactive exhibits include the Playscape, the kid-size community of Our Town, the Fire Truck, the Raising Readers Book Nook, the Space Shuttle, and Discovery Woods.

Game Zones

From the full arcade and crowd-pleasing pizza to the Giant Slide and the Bounce House, Joker’s Family Fun & Games (100 Larrabee Road, Westbrook) is the perfect place to soak up that insatiable kid energy, which can, needless to say, be a challenge to deal when outdoor activities aren’t really an option.

Then there’s Maine Indoor Karting (23 Washington Ave #9782, Scarborough), a place for young and old to crank up the speed and maybe engage in a little friendly family competition.

Shopping

Besides all the shops and boutiques here in Ogunquit, you’ve got a great choice for retail therapy at the Kittery Trading Post (301 U.S. Route 1, Kittery), which has loads of outdoor apparel and equipment. Even on a day when you can’t be outside having fun, you can gear up for your next adventure!
