September Events: Sidewalk Sale & Capriccio Festival
Ogunquit, the Beautiful Place by the Sea, knows how to round out the summer season right. We hope you’ll come join us at one of our Ogunquit.com hotels in the coming weeks to experience some of the delightful events that mark this time of year in town!
The Ogunquit Sidewalk Art Show
On Monday, August 28, for instance, there’s the annual Sidewalk Art Show, which will see many different local artists, artisans, and photographers selling pieces in downtown Ogunquit (Beach Street and Jacob’s Lot). Prepare to be dazzled by the regional talent—and maybe come away with a souvenir or two of your Ogunquit vacation.
Capriccio: Ogunquit’s Festival of the Arts
September, meanwhile, comes anchored by the 27th annual running of Capriccio, Ogunquit’s Festival of the Arts. This townwide culture-fest, which begins Friday, September 8 and continues through Sunday the 17th, puts the spotlight on local arts organizations and, as usual, will be presenting a whole feast of performances and other events for this year’s celebration.
The Capriccio Lowdown
Ogunquit Performing Arts, which manages Capriccio, starts things off on the evening of the 8th with “Broadway Songs and Opera Favorites,” a buffet of musical classics delivered by bass-baritone Erik Kroncke and pianist Mary Jane Austin.
On Sunday the 9th from 9 AM to 2 PM, the skies over Ogunquit Beach will fill with assorted high-flying colors and shapes during the Capriccio Festival of Kites. From kite-decorating contests to the mass liftoff of the Grand Ascension, this is a spectacle you most assuredly don’t want to miss.
The Ogunquit Playhouse is offering buy-one-get-one-free tickets for select Capriccio-week performances of Heartbreak Hotel, an Elvis Presley musical conceived by the creator of the smash hit Million Dollar Quartet and making its world premiere. You can also get a behind-the-scenes look at the venerable theater through the backstage tours the Playhouse is offering on September 8, 10, and 15.
Other Capriccio goodness includes live jazz and film screenings at the Leavitt Theatre, an open house at the Ogunquit Heritage Museum on the 16th from 1 to 4 PM, local gallery tours, and the Capriccio Day at the Museum on the 17th, whcih closes out the festival at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art.
