Ogunquit Playhouse Opening Weekend 2017
Summer’s on the way here on the Atlantic edge of Southern Maine, and that means Ogunquit is gearing up for its trademark season.
One of the reliable harbingers of summer here is the annual opening of the Ogunquit Playhouse, one of the most respected repertories in New England. This year, the Playhouse is celebrating 85 years as “America’s Foremost Summer Theatre,” and it’s presenting a rich feast of productions to mark the occasion.

Opening With Mamma Mia!
The Ogunquit Playhouse launches its 85th anniversary season beginning May 17. The first show on tap is a modern-day classic: Mamma Mia!, a musical structured around the infectious tunes of the Swedish pop group ABBA.
Those featured songs—written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the two “Bs” of ABBA—include such chart-toppers as “Dancing Queen,” “Super Trouper,” “Voulez-Vous,” and “Knowing Me, Knowing You.”
The ABBA melodies and a whole lot of dancing (“Dancing Queen,” remember?) propel the Mamma Mia! storyline, which concerns a Greek-island wedding and a bride seeking her father’s identity. This spirited, fun-filled musical, which debuted back in 1999 in London’s West End, inspired a high-profile 2008 film starring Meryl Streep.
Mamma Mia! runs through July 1, to be followed by Bullets Over Broadway (July 5 through July 29) and then Ragtime (August 2 through August 26). You can check out the Playhouse’s full 2017 season, which extends through the end of October plus a special holiday production, right here.
