The 37th Annual Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude

The Christmas Prelude converts Kennebunkport into a holiday wonderland: so sumptuously that HGTV has ranked the seaside hamlet the No. 2 Christmas Town in America.

The 11-day span of Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude comes far too packed with festivities to fully describe in this blogpost; we recommend studying the complete schedule right here to plan out your visit. But we can gesture at the magic of the event by singling out some highlights, that’s for sure.

The Christmas Prelude gets underway on Thursday the 29th with the “Holidays on Ice Kickoff Party” at Old Vines Wine Bar, a soiree that’ll feature an outdoor BBQ and—get this—some live dueling pianos.

Kennebunkport lights not one but two Christmas trees on Friday, Nov. 30th: one in Dock Square at 5:30 PM and then the one-of-a-kind Lobster Trap Tree in Cape Porpoise Square. Caroling accompanies both these ceremonies, courtesy of the Kennebunk High School Chamber Choir (Dock Square) and the Church on the Cape Choir (Cape Porpoise Square). There’s another Dock Square tree-lighting ceremony on Friday, Dec. 7th as well, that one soundtracked by the Middle School of the Kennebunks Choir.

On Sunday, Dec. 2nd, one of the Christmas Prelude’s signature events takes place at 2 PM when Santa Claus and his “Lobster Elves” roll up at the waterfront and make their way over to Dock Square for pictures. The following Sunday—the last day of the festival—Santa hits up Cape Porpoise Square after an arrival (also at 2 PM) by fire engine.

Other classic Christmas Prelude happenings include a parade of holiday hats (accompanied by the Patriot Fife & Drum Duo) on Saturday, Dec. 1st at 3 PM; the Christmas Fireworks Display on the evening of Friday, Dec. 7th; and the Pooch Parade on Sunday the 9th at 11 AM, which’ll feature some four-legged friends merrily costumed in holiday garb.
