Best Hotel for Ogunquit, ME Patriots Day Weekend

At sunup on April 19, 1775, the British Army and the Colonial militia squared off in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, the opening salvo immortalized by poet Ralph Waldo Emerson as the “shot heard round the world”—the launch of the American Revolution.

Patriot’s Day remembers the Battles of Lexington and Concord and the Revolutionary War in general, and Ogunquit, Maine’s very own celebration of the holiday—officially observed in Vacationland as well as Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Wisconsin—is just around the corner.

The 2018 Patriot’s Day Weekend Celebration in Ogunquit

As always, Patriot’s Day events will be going on all around Ogunquit during the holiday weekend, and lodgings at our Gorges Grant Hotel, Juniper Hill Inn, or the Milestone give you easy access to the happenings.

Some of the reliable highlights of the Patriot’s Day festivities in Ogunquit are the historical reenactments. Two out of the three focus on colonial-era events: the Boston Tea Party, a version of which will go down on Friday at 7 PM aboard the Bunny Clark in Perkins Cove, and George Washington crossing the Delaware, which you can watch from the Main Beach parking lot at 2 PM on Saturday. The third reenactment, at 11 AM Sunday along the Marginal Way, brings to life the iconic flag-raising at Iwo Jima: a tribute to the World War II event and an opportunity to “give thanks to all of those who have fought for our freedom throughout our history,” according to the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce.

(There’ll also be a spread of historical displays—“Various Visions of the Past”—shown at Thompson Green from 10 AM to 3 PM on Saturday.)

And speaking of Patriot’s Day highlights, another most certainly is the Patriotic Pooch Pageant and Fashion Show. Swing by the parking lot of Liquid Dreams at 12:30 PM on Sunday to see four-legged friends of every shape and size competing (unbeknownst to them) in themed costume contests in “Patriotic” and “Favorite Americans” categories. You’ll want to see that one, take it from us…

There’s much more to Ogunquit’s Patriot’s Day Celebration, including a concert by the Patriot Fife & Drum Duo at Ogunquit Baptist Church at 7:30 PM on Friday, the Beach Bazaar and hayrides underway Saturday and Sunday in the Main Beach parking lot, and the American Pie Contest at the Dunaway Center at noon on Saturday. Check out the complete three-day schedule here.
