York’s Wild Kingdom: The Animal Roster

Think of a visit to York’s Wild Kingdom as a safari trip around the world—all without leaving the lovely seacoast of Southern Maine!

The menagerie includes two of the very biggest of big cats: the mighty African lion and the Royal Bengal tiger of South Asia. Here you’ll also find the heftiest of all birds, the ostrich, plus slightly smaller (but still plenty big) emus and southern cassowaries from Australia. Gaze into the long-lashed eyes of a dromedary, admire the inquisitive face and handsome coat of Madagascar’s ring-tailed lemur, and be dazzled by the rainbow face of the mandrill, heaviest of all monkeys.

Then there’s the Eurasian eagle-owl, the emperor scorpion, multiple varieties of Neotropical macaws—and several North American representatives, including the American alligator, prairie dog, and coatimundi, a long-nosed raccoon relative that reaches the U.S. Southwest.

Over in the Butterfly Kingdom, meanwhile, you’ll step into a tropical paradise flittering and fluttering with spectacularly hued Central and South American butterflies.
