Ogunquit Maine Winter Activities Sleigh Rides

Finest Accommodations Near Ogunquit Winter Activities

Thursday, January 2nd, 2020

A winter stay in Ogunquit at the Gorges Grant Hotel, the Juniper Hill Inn or the Milestone puts some fantastic outdoor recreation at your fingertips in our beautiful Southern Maine backyard. Indeed, there’s too much to do to cover in a single blogpost, but in this one we’ll at least sketch out the possibilities by profiling three nearby destinations offering a diverse suite of activities for getting out and enjoying the frosted wonderland we’re lucky to call home.

Sleigh Rides at Rockin’ Horse Stables

C’mon, be honest: Is there a more romantic winter experience than a pastoral cruise over the snowpack in a horse-powered sleigh? That’s exactly the experience offered at Rockin’ Horse Stables in nearby Kennebunkport, where you can climb aboard for half-hour horse-drawn sleigh rides through a wonderfully wintry landscape of fields and woods and then wind down with hot chocolate before a crackling fireplace. In other words: a recipe for pure, unalloyed wintertime magic along the Southern Maine coast!

There are options for all sorts of group sizes: The stable’s small sleighs accommodate a pair of adults, the medium ones handle eight, and the large ones can fit about 18 passengers.

Another cool feature of the Rockin’ Horse Stables sleigh rides: They embark from the property 100-year-old barn.

Winter Recreation at Harris Farm

The 600 or so acres of Harris Farm in Dayton make a heck of a winter playground this time of year. You’ll find some 40 kilometers of cross-country ski trails with both wide-groomed and track-set courses, and a nice spectrum of difficulty level ranging from easy beginner routes to more advanced-level terrain. The property rents pulk sleds for little ones to be pulled along on skiing outings.

You can also rent a fatbike or a pair of snowshoes at Harris Farm if you’re not in the mood for Nordic skiing, and meanwhile there’s a sledding hill on hand as well.

Skiing and fatbiking are allowed at Harris Farm as long as the snow cover permits, so get in touch ahead of time if you’re unsure where things are at!

Powderhouse Hill

We’ve also got a long-running downhill ski area in our vicinity: Powderhouse Hill along Agamenticus Road. Owned by the Town of South Berwick and run by the volunteers of the Powderhouse Ski Club, Powderhouse Hill—which gets its name not from the white stuff itself but from a bygone storage structure for gunpowder built on what was originally known as Butler Hill—is open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

For up-to-date reports on snow conditions at Powderhouse Hill, call the “Snow Phone” at 207-384-5858 or click your way over to the ski area’s Facebook page.

Casual Dining in Ogunquit Maine

Casual Dining in Downtown Ogunquit, Maine

Thursday, January 2nd, 2020

Ogunquit, Maine happens to be a fantastic place to find yourself with an appetite. One reason is the diversity of cuisines and dining experiences to be had in this celebrated seaside hamlet and its greater neighborhood. Along with some excellent fine dining, the Beautiful Place by the Sea has some more casual establishments offering fabulous and crowd-pleasing fare and a winning atmosphere.

What we’ve compiled below is not an exhaustive roundup of the Ogunquit area’s casual restaurants, but a representative sample (we’ve got a longer list right here, incidentally). The following are all within easy reach of the Gorges Grant Hotel, the Juniper Hill Inn, and The Milestone (one of them is right in an Ogunquit property!), so you certainly won’t be hurting for excellent breakfast, lunch, and dinner options while enjoying our downtown hospitality.

Raspberri’s Restaurant (The Gorges Grant Hotel)

Our very own breakfast joint, Raspberri’s—conveniently situated on the first floor of the Gorges Grant Hotel—has a scrumptious menu that’ll ensure your day in the Beautiful Place by the Sea kicks off right. From Belgian waffles and buttermilk pancakes to granola parfait and vegetarian casserole, you just can’t go wrong at Raspberri’s!

Pizza Napoli (667 Main St., Ogunquit)

Pizza Napoli offers Ogunquit’s only brick-oven, Naples-style pizza: an absolute must-try. The pies range from the Napoli with its fresh garlic and basil, pizza cheese, and red sauce and the Bianca with its garlic oil base to meatier options such as the Prosciutto and the Pollo BBQ. Pizzas are the star of the show, but there are also some great supporting cast members: pastas such as Chicken Broccoli Alfredo, Vegetable Risotto, and Bolognese; such entrees as a roasted half-chicken and pan-seared salmon; and a range of salads and appetizers, include some tasty house-made meatballs.

Beer, wine, and other pizza-friendly beverages round out the perfect picture at Pizza Napoli.

The Steakhouse (1205 Post Rd/Rte 1, Wells)

Top-grade beef and Atlantic bounty rub shoulders on the Steakhouse’s menu, which is so broad and varied you’re almost sure to find something for everybody on it. Besides the filet mignon, ribeye, baby-back ribs, and other juicy cuts you’d expect given the eatery’s name, you’ll also find everything from Jumbo Gulf Shrimp Cocktail, French Onion Soup, shepherd’s pie, and lobster scampi to broiled haddock, seafood pie, and a variety of surf-and-turf plates. There’s also a solid kid’s menu here, too.

The Front Porch (9 Shore Road, Ogunquit)

Going strong for more the better part of four decades, the Front Porch combines tasty eats and live entertainment: Along with a dining room and a lounge, you’ll find an honest-to-goodness piano bar within! The wide-ranging cuisine includes pizza-style flatbreads, clam chowder, steaks, seafood entrees, sandwiches, and such specialties as the Front Porch Mac & Cheese (which comes with prosciutto and can be gussied up with chicken, pulled pork, or lobster) and the Porch Burger.

Best Accommodations for Christmas By the Sea

Wednesday, November 20th, 2019

It’s not too early to start planning your getaway to Ogunquit, Maine for the town’s Christmas by the Sea: a fantastic community celebration marking its impressive 33rd edition in 2019. You won’t find better accommodations for the festivities than the Gorges Grant Hotel, the Milestone or the Juniper Hill Inn—book your Ogunquit.com getaway today for this yuletide spectacular!

Ogunquit’s Christmas By the Sea

The specific itinerary for the 2019 Christmas by the Sea event—which takes place December 13th through the 15th—hasn’t been revealed yet, but you can be sure of a fantastic time absolutely drenched in merry holiday spirit along the Gulf of Maine.

Christmas by the Sea will feature a slew of holiday crafts, games, hayrides, and markets that make for one of Maine’s truly classic family-friendly seasonal festivals.

There’ll also be a well-attended Christmas Parade wending its way from Perkins Cove to Main Beach, where a jampacked evening of fun will then unfold, with the Ogunquit Ocean Rescue Polar Plunge, a bonfire, and some spectacular oceanfront fireworks.

Both Veterans Park and Rotary Park will host tree-lighting ceremonies (accompanied by caroling, warm beverages, and no small quantity of good cheer) during Christmas by the Sea, while holiday concerts will go down at the Ogunquit Baptist Church and some holiday flicks at the Dunaway Center.

What else? Well, how about wine tastings, late-night parties, and some high-profile appearances by the big man himself, Santa Claus, whose cameos are likely to delight not only the younger crowd but all the kids-at-heart in attendance.

Additional Nearby Holiday Happenings

Ogunquit’s Christmas by the Sea overlaps, conveniently, with two other holiday festivals along the local coast. From December 5 through the 15th, Kennebunkport will be throwing its 38th annual Christmas Prelude, which’ll include such favorite traditions as the lighting of the Lobster Trap Tree in Cape Porpoise Square, the Hat Parade, and the grand arrival of Santa (he’s going to be busy in Southern Maine next month) by—what else—lobster boat.

On December 15th—the Sunday marking the last day of both Christmas by the Sea and Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude—our neighboring town of Wells will host its 34th annual Christmas Parade, easily combined with Ogunquit festivities.
